What is more Southern than a Fried Green Tomato? It’s tangy, crispy fried, and oh so yummy. Since I’m all about learning how to cook real Southern food, this very traditional recipe was at the top of my list.
Plus we’ve got a ton of the main ingredient right in our garden!
Lately my go-to dinner inspiration has become The Blue Willow Inn’s Cookbook by Jane & Michael Stern. It’s been one of my favorite reads for years now. Yes, I love to read cookbooks {among other things and more trashy things}.
If you ever find yourself in between Atlanta and Athens, Georgia do yourself a favor. Take a quick detour to small town of Social Circle and seek out The Blue Willow Inn Restaurant. After your first bite of deliciousness from their Southern buffet you will thank yourself.
To begin, slice three large tomatoes into 1/4″ slices.
In a bowl, mix together 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk and 2 eggs. Whisk in 1 tablespoon flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Soak tomato slices in this mixture for 15-20 minutes.
Don’t have buttermilk? Add 1 teaspoon of lemon juice to 1 cup of whole milk. Let it sit for 10 minutes to work it’s magic then use as buttermilk substitute in recipes.
Create a dreading mixture by mixing together 1 1/2 cup self rising flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Dread tomato slices one at a time in seasoned flour. Shake off excess.
Heat about 1 inch of oil in heavy skillet. Fry slices in hot oil. Do not over crowd.
Fry each side until golden brown and crispy. Drain on paper towels. Salt immediately after frying.
Easy and delicious! Just like I love my recipes.
Fried Green Tomatoes have graced our dinner table several times recently.
Once as a side dish. Once as a fun appetizer for company.
And once as this…

Ashley, this looks delicious and I love that the tomatoes are from your own garden. — Sabine
My children have been told never to pick the green tomatoes and they were so upset that I was gathering up the green ones for dinner! 😉

Thanks for joining the Link Up this week!
I grew up in Texas and I think there are different ways of doing them depending on where you live. My way is to slice, pat them dry, lightly dredge in flour that’s been seasoned w/salt and pepper, dip in egg and then coat in yellow corn meal.
Soaking in buttermilk and using self rising flour is definitely different than any of the ones I’ve ever had. I’m not saying it’s bad, just different. 🙂
I’ve actually had fried green tomatoes in cornmeal too. It’s pretty yummy both ways! 😉

My husband loves fried green tomatoes and we also have them in our garden right now. The recipe looks great but I’m still not sure about the fish sandwich. I just might have to try it though. Thanks for sharing with Creative Spark Link Party. Have a great day!
