Yes, it’s true. I met my mother-in-law over a bowl of Dill Dip. Her homemade Dill Dip Recipe to be exact.
Honey and I had been dating for months when he finally suggested a visit to meet his parents. During the two hour drive to his small hometown, he told me all about his mama.
He informed me that she loved to tell silly jokes, go on mountain trips with her girlfriends, and *gasp* played bingo! She even loved to go hunting and was out to get a big buck named Rufus.
Mrs. Martha was all those things and more. She adored telling jokes, was unbelievably proud of her four children, and could talk a blue streak for hours on end.
I loved her and her homemade Dill Dip Recipe immediately.
When Honey asked me to make “something really good” for our next tailgating party, I thought of that afternoon and the care Mrs. Martha had taken in preparing one of her finest recipes for me.
So today I’m sharing a little bit of Mrs. Martha with you.
Mrs. Martha’s Dill Dip Recipe
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 tablespoon dill, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon green onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 teaspoon seasoned salt
Combine all the ingredients together in a bowl. Chill several hours before serving with veggies or potato chips (Mrs. Martha’s favorite).
Mrs. Martha has gone on to heaven now. She loved my boys dearly but never knew my sweet Tootsie whose spunky {and talkative} spirit is so much like her.
So while we munched happily on the dill dip and veggies, I shared my stories of their grandmother with the children. She would get such a kick out of them loving one of her favorite dishes!

Such a fun story Ashley! I love it, and the dill dip! My own sweet mama used to be awfully fond of her dill dip…and always had dill growing in her garden! I plant it now, in memory of her 🙂
What a sweet memory! We planted dill in our garden this year but the tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers blocked all the sunlight and it died. So sad…

The recipe looks so yummy and easy to make. A big bag of chips sounds like a perfect combination. Off topic, i love the layered handprint picture in the background. I must steal (um borrow) that idea!
Steal away, sweet friend! And yes this dip is fabulously awesome with a big bowl of salty chips!

mmMmMmm dill dip! Thanks Grandma Martha!
I’m sure my grandma made some great food, but I just remember her pumping me full of M&M’s! NOT complaining! Haha.
Mrs. Martha must be smiling down from heaven as you pass this recipe around. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, what a great question! My grandmother grew up in the West Virginia mountains, before moving to Philadelphia, and then finally Nebraska. She was a remarkable woman, and cooking for others was her passion. My favorite memories of her always involve food, from the eggs she would cook for breakfast when I visited, to the “chocolate chipper” cookies she always stocked the cookie jar with. She loved to make big batches of food for people who were sick or grieving. And she made pies and perogis from scratch! I loved your post with its recipe (looks super easy and perfect for tailgating or the upcoming holidays!) Thanks for sending me down memory lane, remembering Grandma Betty!
You are so welcome! Thank you for sharing your Grandma Betty story with me. 😉

What a sweet story behind a delicious looking dip. My grandparents live about 5 minutes from my house, and are AMAZING cooks. You name it and they can make it, 10x better than wherever else you may have tasted it before. I love coming over to bake with them, and talk about cooking and baking. Thanks so much for sharing this at DDT!
