Turning four years old is a pretty big deal to little ones. To our daughter, Tootsie, it’s one more year closer to being a “whole hand” and out of her “baby” car seat. She’s making her mama’s heart sad with her determination to grow big.
Let me show you how we celebrated her Mermaid Birthday Party Bash by pulling together easy DIY projects, fun food, and a fabulous Little Mermaid Birthday Cake.
My aunt’s pool was the perfect location to gather Tootsie’s sweet friends for a day of swimming and celebrating. It was a great backdrop for our Mermaid Party Theme. This post contains affiliate links marked with an asterisk. Click here for my full disclosure policy.
From the sweet Little Mermaid Paper Plates* and Ariel the Little Mermaid Paper Cups*
to the coordinating napkins and balloons, we were able to add fun touches all over the pool area.
My favorite project was the paper lanterns that were DIY’ed into fabulous jellyfish and fish. {Click here} for the simple jellyfish tutorial.
After splashing in the pool, the little ones were hungry for yummy party food! The table was set with sea cucumbers, crab leg carrots, goldfish, and grape seaweed skewers. I had all intentions of creating cutsie little signs for all the food but life got way busy, way fast.

The best was a watermelon shark’s head filled with fresh fruit. The boys loved helping me carve the scary teeth! Go {here} for a step-by-step tutorial to make your own.
Of course, the main attraction was the Little Mermaid Birthday Cake!
Picking a cake up from the local bakery would have been so easy but hearing her gasp when she saw the cake for the first time made it all worth it. {Click here} to see the complete cake decorating tutorial. You won’t believe my secret to creating professional looking cakes at home!
Here’s a peek inside the cake. Love the different pink layers!
A simple woven basket held Little Mermaid plates*, coordinating napkins, and other cake eating supplies. Grass skirts from the Dollar Store made a great backdrop for the cake table. Dollar Store bubbles are easy peasy favors for the little swimmers.
Of course, one of Tootsie’s favorite gifts were these Ariel Bubbles from one of her sweet friends.
Our Mermaid Birthday Party was so much fun! A few DIY projects, a fun Little Mermaid Cake, and lots of festive party supplies helped our family make memories for our big four year old.

It’s making me sad thinking about when my little guy was four! It’s so hard to watch our babies grow up – fun but sad too! You did an awesome job with the cake and decorations!
It is sad to know they are growing! I try very hard to make myself slow down and snuggle with each of mine for a little bit each day.
