How to Make Campfire Birthday Cake

Our boys are super excited about their big Backyard Birthday Party!  Well, you can’t have a Backyard Campout Birthday Party without a Campfire Birthday Cake!

This is the PERFECT birthday cake for my son's Backyard Campout Birthday Party! Great step by step directions for making a Campfire Birthday Cake! Awesome idea for a summer birthday party! // 3 Little Greenwoods

Campfire Birthday Cake: Supplies

  • 1 box of your favorite cake mix
  • 8 inch cake pans
  • 2 containers of chocolate icing
  • cardboard cake board
  • red candy melts
  • yellow candy melts
  • chocolate candy {for fire pit surround}
  • Pirouette rolled wafer cookies from Pepperidge Farms

How to Make a Campfire Cake: Instructions

Step 1: Start by baking and icing the cakes.

Bake two 8″ layers of your favorite box cake mix. Ice it with chocolate icing.

Step 2. Create flames for the camp fire with the red and yellow candy melts.

I added melted red candy melts to a ziploc bag. I snipped the corner to turn it into a makeshift piping bag. To create the flames I simply piped out free form flame shapes on wax paper.

A wooden skewer was helpful with stirring the melted candy and spreading out the “flames”.

The flames looked more like coral so I layered a bit of orange on top. Just add a few yellow candy melts to the red and give it a mix to make orange. Then a bit more plain yellow on top of that.

Step 3. Create a Campfire Ring with Chocolates

I knew there was no way I could draw a perfect circle so I grabbed my favorite coffee mug and turned it upside down in the middle of the cake.

Ta-da! A perfect template for my campfire ring!

There are a ton of candy choices for what to use for the ring. Any sort of candy would work.

But when I found solid chocolate Easter eggs on sale for 70% off, I snatch up a bag!

Now oval egg shaped chocolates wouldn’t look much like campfire rocks. But smack them with the bottom of a coffee mug and they turn into jagged, misshapen rocks! 🙂

Step 4. Build the Campfire for your DIY Birthday Cake

Create the fire by adding a dollop of icing then layer pieces of the rolled wafer cookies and candy melt flames. Give the cake a turn as you build the fire to make sure it looks great from all sides.

This Campfire Birthday Cake was so much fun to make! All of the decorations were easy to find at our local grocery store and Hobby Lobby.

But the best part was the gasp that came out of my Big Boy when he saw the cake for the first time! Every birthday boy deserves a special cake.

Especially when he turns ten years old! I love that sweet boy!
