Celebrate your favorite camper with a Camping Birthday Party! This post includes fun camping birthday party ideas, inexpensive decorations, backyard camping party games, and two campfire cake instructions.
To celebrate our boys birthdays this spring we threw a Backyard Camping Birthday Party! It was a fun yet laid back party filled with games, a backyard movie, and two of the coolest campout birthday cakes you’ve ever seen!
How to Host a Camping Birthday Party
A huge DIY banner welcomes the campers! This DIY birthday banner was so simple that the boys did most of the work. {Click here} to get all the do-it-yourself details.
Our boys were eager to help set up their campsites. Of course, each needed a separate tent for all their buddies to sleep in. Everyone knows that 10 year old boys are too manly to camp out with 7 year olds! 🙂
Tables to hold the party supplies, presents and cakes were set up on our back deck. It was great to have almost the entire party outside. Thank goodness we had awesome weather!
Flashlights are a must at any campout party. They served as party favors and provided great fun for a game of nighttime hide and seek. I picked these up from Target’s Dollar Spot.
Once all the party guests arrived, it was time for camping party games! All the supplies were stashed into a wooden crate to make it easy to grab. Here’s a list of easy party games we played:
Camping Party Games
Camping Party Game #1: 3-legged Races
We used strips of cloth to tie the children’s legs together for this fun game. Boys are all about racing to see how is the fastest!
Camping Party Game #2: “Don’t Drop the Fire Crystal” Race
This game is exactly like the old “egg and spoon” race but we made it way more exciting by creating fire crystals (balled up pieces of red cardstock) for the children to carry.
Even Princess Tootsie wanted to try! I promise she looked way more coordinated at the beginning of the party.
Camping Party Game #3: Scavenger Hunt
All you need is a paper lunch bag, a marker, and a list of things easily found in your backyard. They loved tearing through the yard collecting items!
After everything on the list of checked off, the children choose treasure (pre-filled Easter eggs bought on sale). 😉
After the games, it was time for a laid back dinner of hotdogs, chips and cake!
Although the boys did agree to a combined camping birthday party, they were very vocal about having two separate birthday cakes.
Camping Birthday Cakes
Big Boy’s Campfire Birthday Cake was a huge hit! Go {here} to see how I made it!
Not to be outdone, Little Boy wanted an entire campsite on his birthday cake! It is filled with a campfire, tent, trees, and even a sweet red bird.
Go see how I made this DIY camping birthday cake!
Once candles were blown out and the cake was cut, it was time for the real campfire and s’mores.
The boys thought these super huge marshmallows were awesome! I’m surprised there were any left to roast. Little sneakers! 😉
After all that fun, it was time to settle down with a movie on the big screen.
Honey attached a side to our tailgating tent to create a big screen for a projector. It worked like a charm and was super cool to watch the movie on a giant screen!
Here’s our Sweet Yellow Dog plotting her sneak attack on all the party leftovers, dropped shoes, and other random objects laying around the backyard.
Remember my Garden Varmint post? I can’t wait to show you all the things that went missing the morning after the Campout Birthday Party!
This Backyard Campout Birthday Party was by far our boys favorite! Keeping the party simple with a few games and a easy menu made for a laid back yet fun time for this party planning Mama.
As always, I hope we have inspired you to celebrate with your family!

Very, very cool party! And that is the cutest cake!
Thank you so much, Allie! I had the best time planning it with the boys!
What a great idea for a birthday party! The cakes were awesome! It looks like the kids had a blast!!! And maybe once they finally fell asleep the dog had fun nibbling up all the fallen leftovers?! 😛
Hey Sweet Friend!
That silly dog was probably sick from all the half eaten hotdogs, dropped huge-fungus marshmallows, and pieces of cake she ate! But we love her sneaky self!
What a cool birthday! That cake is awesome. I’m stopping by from the Tuesday blog hop & I’m a new follower through Bloglovin. I hope your having a great day.
Thanks so much for the comment love and for being a new follower! I’m hoping over to check out your blog right now!
I love how you kept things simple, but at the same time there were lots of fun details! You really did an amazing job!
Thanks so much! It was a much more laid back kind of party than Tootsie’s Princess Sofia party last summer. Girls are a tad more high maintenance that boys to say the least! 😉
What a fun party! You really put a lot of time into it!! I love the theme, so perfect for outside and for boys!! 🙂
It was the perfect party theme for two rough and tumble little boys!
Oh my goodness!! I am SO glad you did this first! Ours will not even be half as cool, but this helps me so much. P.S. Expect lots of panicked, “HELP ME!” messages next week as I try to pull this together! Thanks for all the inspiration, Ashley! 🙂
I searched all over Pinterest trying to find someone else who had done the campout party theme without getting monogrammed backpacks and having individual tents packs for the campers. My goal was to have a fun party for me and the kids! 😉 Just let me know if you have any questions!
This is brilliant! This is for sure going to be a theme for a future birthday party for my little boy! I love camping, tents, and sitting around a fire. He already loves being outside and I’m sure he’ll love all of these things when he’s a bit older (he’s six months old now).
Thanks for the inspiration! I found your post through the BeYoutiful link party.
Yay! So excited you found me. Our boys’ Campout Birthday Party was super fun and they loved celebrating with their friends. Hopping over to ‘see’ you! 😉
