Our sweet boys are still talking about how fun they had at their Backyard Campout Birthday Party! Their favorite parts of the party were the fun games we played and sleeping in tents. But my favorite part was the two cakes I made to celebrate their special day!
Little Boy requested a tent atop his Backyard Campout Birthday Cake. Why stop at one tent when you can have an entire campsite?
Here’s what you will need to make your own Backyard Campout Birthday Cake:
- 2 eight inch cake layers
- 2 containers of chocolate icing
- round cardboard cake board
- red and yellow candy melts {for flames and red bird}
- green candy melts {for trees}
- chocolate candy {for fire pit surround}
- Pirouette rolled wafer cookies from Pepperidge Farms {for campfire}
- graham crackers
Step 1: Start by baking and icing the cakes.
My favorite White Almond Cake recipe is from Kat at Mini Cake Love. It is my go-to recipe for all our celebrations!
2. Create flames for the camp fire with the red and yellow candy melts.
Candy melts make flame building super easy! Go {here} to see the full tutorial.
3. Create a Campfire Ring with Chocolates
I knew there was no way I could draw a perfect circle for the campfire so I grabbed small sauce cup and turned it upside down on the top of the cake. Leftover chocolate Easter eggs make perfect rocks. After you smash them with the bottom of a coffee cup, of course! 😉
Add a big dollop of chocolate in the middle then begin to build the fire with broken pieces of rolled wafer cookies and candy melt flames.
4. Create trees with green candy melts.
I added melted green candy melts to a ziploc bag. I snipped the corner to turn it into a makeshift piping bag. To create the trees I simply piped out free form tree shapes on wax paper.
A wooden skewer was helpful with stirring the melted candy and spreading out the “tree limbs”.
After the trees dried and firmed up, I attached them to pieces of rolled wafer cookies using more melted candy. The cookies made tree trunks and made sticking the trees in the icing a snap.
Then I got inspired and added a sweet red bird to one of the trees. He is just melted red candy piped into an easy bird shape. Love him!
5. Add a tent.
Did you notice the tent size switcharoo? The original tent was way too small compared to the roaring fire I built. So I started over with larger pieces of graham cracker cookies to make a simple tent. Adding fun details with the melted red candy make the tent extra special!
This cake was super easy and fun to make. Plus my Little Boy loved it!
