Wreath making, whether it's a creative hobby or a business, can be an incredibly rewarding endeavor. However, it can also become incredibly expensive if you aren’t paying close attention to how much you’re spending on supplies.
I often get asked, ‘How do you NOT overspend on wreath making supplies?’. And I get it.
The allure of that adorable new seasonal ribbon or a stunning faux flower you’ve never seen before can be irresistible, especially if you are spending time watching other wreath makers showcase these items in their videos. Before you know it, your cart is overflowing and your wallet is considerably lighter.
But fear not, because I am going to suggest five tips for avoiding the pitfalls of overspending. By following these suggestions, I think you’ll find that you are still able to enjoy the craft of wreath making without putting a noticeable dent in your bank account.
5 Ways to Save Money on Wreath Supplies
Tip #1 – Make a plan.
Seriously, you need a plan.
Start by thinking about what type of wreath you plan to make. Choose the colors and components that you want to use, and then write it down on a list before you even walk into the store!
This will keep you focused on looking for the things that you know you need so that you won’t be so distracted by everything else.
Tip #2 – Shop your stash.
We all have spaces that are filled with supplies. So before you buy anything else, go and see what you can find in your current stash of supplies. You may surprise yourself with what you can pull together to make a beautiful design.
This is not only a money saver, but it is also a great creative exercise!
Tip #3 – Stay out of stores.
Don’t tempt yourself, just stay out of the stores – even if they are having the BEST end of year clearance ever! It is easy to talk yourself into taking advantage of a great sale, but if you have a workspace full of supplies, you don’t need any more. Trust me, and I know this isn’t fun to hear . . . you don’t need any more.
But . . . if you don’t have a great stash for the next season, and you truly do need to build up your inventory – then shop the sales.
Tip #4 – Set a budget.
I know, we all cringe at that word, but it really is an important step, especially if you are planning to sell the items you make.
You want to make sure that you are going to get a profit out of what you are creating, and you need to stay within the guidelines of how much your customer is willing to pay.
Tip # 5 – Don’t compare yourself to others.
When you are watching one of your favorite wreath makers make a beautiful design and they have a brand new ribbon or a beautiful flower that you love – it doesn’t mean you have to run out and get it too.
Make sure you really think about it before you run to the store or jump online to buy it. Perhaps instead of buying the exact flower that they used, you can find something that you already own that has a similar design aesthetic. Do you already have a flower in your stash that would work just as well?
Look at what you’ve got. Use what you have. And when you do need to buy, buy with intention.

The person that goes out with a list and only buys supplies to make one thing, is well, one in a million. In 60 years, I met only one. We love sales and pretty stuff. Now that I am getting older, my question is will I be here next year to use it ? It's very addictive. Remember back in the days of 90% off ? When business is really good, you stock up, but sales can come to a screeching halt with the economy. When people have to chose beyween bills and our flowers, bills win. Remember, when you live alone- there is nobody to stop you from sales! LOL Pinterest might not be out friend with all the tempting pretties.
