This summer the goal has been to update our blah and beige kitchen.
A Navy Chandelier, a beautifully transformed Kitchen Hutch, and No-Sew Kitchen Curtains have all done their part to add layers of pattern and color in the space.
But for the colorful Kitchen Curtains to be possible we needed a curtain rod for this large bay window.
The only ones I could find were expensive. These Bay Window Curtain Rods were way over my teeny, tiny kitchen makeover budget!
I wasn’t about to spend big bucks on rods when I’d whipped up No-Sew Kitchen Curtains from $20 Target tablecloths.
Pinterest here I come!
Sure enough I discovered a simple tutorial for DIY Bay Window Curtain Rods. Using the tutorial as inspiration, off I went to Home Depot to find a suitable candidate for my curtain rod project.
DIY Bay Window Curtain Rods ~ Supplies Needed
10′ metal electrical conduit
Rust-Oleum Wheel Spray Paint {cheap fancy silver spray paint!}
Truthfully, I adore our hometown Home Depot. Every time I go there are always plenty of knowledgeable associates to help me with any questions I have. This day was no exception.
Pete, my Home Depot hero, listened to my idea, cocked his head, then told me I was a very smart lady! HA! He led me straight to the electrical conduit aisle and to this $3 ten foot rod.
How to Make Bay Window Curtain Rods
Back home I measured the bay windows to decide exactly where the angles of the curtain rod should be.
Here’s a simple diagram of the plan I came up with. Mark the measurements of where the bends should be using a Sharpie.
To find the angle of the walls, I simply held two pieces of cardstock in the corners and stapled the papers together to hold the angle.
Next we made the bay window curtain pole by bending the electrical conduit to the correct angle. Our oldest son held one end while my husband bent the rod.
After the curtain rod was bent I gave it a coat of silver spray paint.
Rust-Oleum Wheel Spray Paint to be exact. This stuff works a lot like Krylon Looking Glass Spray Paint but way cheaper.
Recycled curtain rod brackets and finials also got a shiny new coat of silver.
Check out my seriously awesome {and seriously cheap} Bay Window Curtain Rod!
Thanks to my home decor hoarding, I was able to make our DIY Bay Window Curtain Rod for less than $10.
Even if you don’t have extra supplies laying down this project is still considerably less than purchasing a premade curtain rod.

Thanks for joining the Link Up this week!
That is pretty stinkn’ smart! I love how it is one continuous rod too and not individuals rods that would break up the window.
I know! I got totally lucky that the measurements worked out and I didn’t have to piece the rod together. 😉

Love this. I’ve got a bay shaped wall (I’m missing the 2 side windows to make it a bay window in my mind…) that I both love and hate. I love the shape of the wall and the extra bit of space that it gives, however in the winter it is the coldest spot in my house so curtains are a must for it. Only problem is I’m not willing to spend the money for a bay window curtain rod and a regular rod just doesn’t work… thinking I might have to go to the electrical section at home depot for when I turn my attention to that room.
Thanks for sharing, looking forward to fixing my little issue.

Oh I hope this easy Bay Window Curtain Rod tutorial works for your space!
~ Ashley
I love your idea! I got my rod today and everything I need except the finials. All of the ones I have found have a screw for a wooden rod. Any ideas on where I can find something to use with a metal rod? Also, how high did you hang your curtains from the top of the window? Thank you!
Thats awesome Ashley! What a great idea! Love it!
Hey Kelley! Thanks so much for the comment love. This bay window curtain rod was so simple to make!

We just moved into our home back in June. We have a bay window with some nice shades so I figured I wouldn’t hang any curtains there mainly because I wouldn’t know how. This is so awesome and thanks to you, my bay window will look nicely dressed. Thank you so much for sharing!! Very creative!! -Bev

Girl! !! What a FABULOUS idea!!! Thank you for sharing
Thanks so much, Crystal! I hope you were able to use the tutorial for bay window rods in your home!
Thank you for the idea!!! How did you attach the finials to the rod? Thanks!
Thanks so much for the question, Bekah! I screwed the finials into a wine cork, trimmed the cork to fit into the end of the rod then crammed them on. 🙂 Easy peasy!
You are so so smart and super creative, can’t believe that’s how you put the finials in. I was just asking my husband if the conduit came with treading at the ends?
I love your ideas. I’m trying the curtain DIY that you have in another pinterest with the 1/3 expensive on the top part just waiting on the fusion tape to arrive tomorrow. So excited, bought the walmart navy blackout and adding this beautiful drapery fabric from Hobby Lobby with a neat ribbon, and gonna put it together soon. Thanks for the excellent ideas!!!
This makes me so hopeful that I don’t need to spend a fortune on bay curtain rods!! One question though – how did you attach your finials to the conduit? And are the finials removable?
Thanks in advance!
So glad you asked! I actually screwed the old finials into a wine cork, trimmed the cork to fit the end of the curtain rod, then crammed them on. Worked like a charm!
{big hugs}
~ Ashley
Awesome! Are the ends of the rod already threaded to be able to screw your own finials in?
Oops nevermind… I see your comment on the cork method. Brilliant! 🙂
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment on my DIY curtain rods post! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hi,
If i sent you a picture of out bay window; would you able to give us ideas?
THIS IS PERFECT! I have been swearing at our over extended curtain rods that don’t support the weight of the double window, thermal insulated curtains that are hung on them. And I am so sick of the two pieces of rod sliding apart (My mom, who lives with us, stopped this problem on one with duct tape.) I can’t wait to go to Home Depot!
Thanks again for the idea.
YAY! I’m so excited you are going to use my tutorial to help solve your curtain rod problem! I’d love for you to follow me on FB and share a picture of your new curtain rod with my readers!
I have a question. How well do your curtains slide around the bend in the conduit? I really want to use a conduit bender on mine to get a nice smooth curve, but I’m having ingredients troy let finding someone that has one I can borrow. I am now toying with the idea of just bending it, but I feel like the curtain may not glide as well or fall as well with the more abrupt bend. Do you think there would be value in a more smooth bend if I can get my hands on a conduit bender? Or is it not worth the hassle? Thanks! I like your wine cork tip for the finials!
Hey Kim! Thanks so much for the great question. My bay window curtains do snag a little bit on the bend in the rod but a little working gets the curtain rods to slide over. I haven’t used a conduit bender so I’m not sure but it may be worth a try. Please let me know how if works if you use one!
I wish you would have shown a picture of the the bent part of the rod. I would like to have seen how it looked mounted. Also, where did you mount the bracket by the bend?
Great idea! I was wondering how you attached the finials? Did I miss that part?
Amy
Hey Amy! I actually used blue painters blue but Command strips would be a better choice. Thanks so much for visiting my blog!
Where did u get those pineapple ends?
Hey Shane! The pineapples are actually lamp shade finials.
