In just 14 days I turned our drab, out of date dining room into a bright, welcoming space to entertain just in time for Mother’s Day. From painting the room to recovering the chairs, I did it all without breaking the bank.
A big goofy smile is what I get each time I walk by the room. I love the wall color, the breezy curtains, and the memories I have of eating my grandmother’s fried chicken at that table.
After inheriting my Grandmother’s dining room furniture, I wanted to giving our browny, drab dining room a new look. I was able to completely transform the space for less than $100.
Here’s the very boring and very brown before.
Ecru and chocolaty walls, brown furniture, and tan curtains.
And the after… so pretty.
But the best part of all was seeing my grandmother’s eyes light up when she saw the table and chairs she bought with my grandfather 45 years ago sitting in my house all gussied up. Then she told me how proud she was of me. And that she takes full credit for my crafty nature.
Dining Room Makeover on a Budget
The power of paint is fabulous! I used Martha Stewart “Enamelware” paint. The cost to transform the dark tan walls to calm blue was only $35.
The dining room received a fabulous mid century modern dining room set thanks to a generous gift from my grandmother.
Recovered dated dining room chairs is a great way to get a new look! All they needed were two “Green Lattice” shower curtains. I found them on clearance for $14 a piece!
While I loved the clean lines of the china cabinet it was a bit dark on the inside. Thanks to a bit of wrapping paper it’s now light and bright. This project only cost $3!

You are going to love these DIY curtains I made! They are no-sew and only cost me $20 per window. {Click here} to get the complete tutorial.
You can find more no-sew curtain ideas here, here, and here {these are my favorite}!
This sweet little side table used to be way too country. My mother picked it up decades ago at a craft fair. Once she shared it with me I knew it was going to need a new coat of paint to fit in with the dining room makeover.
I wasn’t brave enough to spray paint this huge brass chandelier. Besides I kinda like the formality of this light fixture. It did get a teeny bit of pattern added to each candlestick though.
