This DIY Star Door Decor looks so fabulous and patriotic even without the traditional colors of the Fourth of July!
More than 30 Fabulous Patriotic projects will be shared on some of the most awesome blogs around. I can’t wait to see all of the inspirational projects and hope YOU will find some inspiration as well.
I am one lucky girl to be joining these awesomely creative ladies to take a crack at creating patriotic projects or recipes without using the traditional red, white and blue color scheme!
Wait. What?
No red, white, or blue? How in the world do I do that?
Talk about a challenge! It’s a good thing I’ve been dying to create some painted wooden shapes for my front door.
Of course, before the DIY Star Door Decor project could get started I had to get a big star. That meant I needed help with cutting wood. That meant power tools. This post contains affiliate links for your shopping convenience. {Click here} to see my complete disclosure policy.
At the mention of me using his power tools, Honey decided he better get involved. I’m so sneaky like that!
DIY Star Door Hanger: Supplies
- large sheet of pressboard
- large star template
Dremel Tool– totally didn’t work!- Jig Saw
- white spray paint
- acrylic craft paint
- chevron, burlap ribbon
Honey first thought one of the attachments for his new Dremel tool would make quick work with cutting the pressboard {leftover from the kitchen hutch transformation}.
But the Dremel made an awful noise, smoked like crazy and smelled as if it would burst into flames at any minute. If we had the correct attachment it probably would have worked like a charm. 🙂
Anywho… Honey busted out the jig saw and we were in business! Make sure to follow all manual instructions and wear proper safety gear when working with power tools.
Honey is the best handyman a DIY blogger could ask for! With his help I got this lovely DIY star. It was drawn by me and measures approximately 27″ high by 20″ across.
The background of the entire piece needed to be white so I gave it a coat of glossy white spray paint.
Then came the fun part! Simple hand drawn star shapes were traced on the top. See my little paper stencil? The bottom of the shape was covered with alternating thick and thin stripes in grey and white.
Details will always make any painting project stand out. Here’s the acrylic paint colors I used and how I used them on the DIY Star Door Decor.
- White – highlights to star’s centers and polka dots
- Lemon Yellow – inside of stars
- Yellow Medium – base color of stars
- Yellow Ochre – outline of stars
- Warm Grey – highlights on grey stripes
- Medium Grey – base color of stripes
- Black – border along outside of shape and along the top of grey stripe
To make the star shape stand out, I outlined the entire piece with black then added white polka dots along the edges.
A pencil eraser worked the best for me but search for your own dot maker tool. You might discover a q-tip or the end of a paintbrush works for you. And ummm, do yourself a favor and don’t paint directly on your granite countertops. What was I thinking?
A simple burlap ribbon bow is the perfect finishing touch. The black chevron ties in all the black.
I just love having something fun on the front door. My Star Spangler Door Decor looks awesome against the red!
I hope you have been inspired by this super fun and simple DIY Star Door Decor! It is perfect for celebrating Memorial Day, Fourth of July, or Summer!

I know, right?! What was I thinking painting on my counters? Maybe it was because I was trying to finish up before Tootsie woke up from her afternoon nap. 😉

I love your star. I think it doesn’t always have to be the “right” colors. Yours is so whimsy. Great idea.
