Playful Words Made Washi Tape ~ A Tutorial

Today I am excited share how I created the Playful Words Made with Washi Tape for Toosie’s DIY Dress Up Station.

Playful Words Made with Washi Tape ~ A Tutorial by 3 Little Greenwoods {3littlegreenwoods.com}

Tasha from Designer Trapped in a Lawyer’s Body‘s tutorial on Make Your Own Washi Tape Wall Decals was the inspiration for Tootsie’s Imagination Wall’s playful words. I am so grateful she shared her technique because it saved me almost $50 from the local vinyl shop!

The first thing I did was log onto Microsoft Word to create the words I wanted to use on her Dress Up Station wall.

Choosing the right font is important. Since you will be cutting these letters out it needs have simple lines. Anything very intricate will be too difficult to work with. I choose Lucinda Calligraphy as my font and enlarged the size to 500.

If you go to “Text Box” in Word it should give you the option of making a word with the letters in outline only.  This step isn’t necessary but it helps to save on printer ink!

washi tape decor

The letters were so large it took several pieces of paper to print them. After the words were taped together I hung them on the wall to see if the size of the words would work.

wall decals

Begin by cutting the letters out. I cut as close to the letters as I could and grouped two of them together. The letters will become a template for the washi tape letters.

Next place a sheet of parchment paper on top of the letter. Use strips of washi tape on the parchment paper to cover the letter. Overlap each strip of the washi tape as you cover the letter. Overlapping the tape will help the letter to stick together when you gently peel it from the parchment paper. Make sure to extend the tape past the letter’s edge. Remember you are going to be cutting it out.

Playful Words Made with Washi Tape ~ A Tutorial by 3 Little Greenwoods {3littlegreenwoods.com}Binder clips are very useful holding the washi tape covered parchment paper and the letter together for cutting.

A sharp Exacto knife would be a great tool for cutting out the letters. Especially the inside parts. But my scissors worked just fine. DIY wall decalswashi tape words

Once all the letters are cut out grab your trusty level. I drew a *very light* guideline on the wall where the words were to be placed. Carefully peel the washi tape away from the parchment paper and place it on the wall.

Playful Words Made with Washi Tape ~ A Tutorial by 3 Little Greenwoods {3littlegreenwoods.com}Don’t worry if the letter come apart in a few spots. Just stick it back together. 🙂

DIY washi tape decalsGive all the letters a good rub to adhere them to the wall securely. If you have a piece that keeps popping up, dab it with a bit of glue. Rubber cement or Elmer’s will work.

This was a super easy project! I love how the words add a playful touch to the Dress Up Station.

This is such a fun room! Ok what kind is the dollhouse?! I love dollhouses and that looks so cute and fun! This is SUPER awesome, I had a Cricut but it’s out of commission and I am not ready to take the plunge into the Silhouette world! Def using this!!! I really like that if and when Tootsie wants to change her room, taking the washi tape down won’t be any trouble and won’t mess up the walls!

I know Cricut and Silhouette machine must be awesome but the price tag? Ghesh! I’ll keep making my word with washi tape!

The doll house is Fisher Price (Loving Family Christmas doll house). Santa brought it for Tootsie this year and I love it as much as she does!

This is gorgeous! And such a fun way to establish or reinforce “stations” in a playroom – something I’ve just stumbled upon. Very artsy and organized.
