How to Make a Clock from an Electrical Spool: Instructions
This could be considered an upcycle or maybe even a roadside rescue (one of my favorite pastimes is going through my neighborhood looking for goodies on trash day)
This gorgeous (and beaten up) piece of wood came from an electrical spool. I have a friend at church that is an electrician. His wife was generous enough to offer for him to get me not one, but two of these spools! SCORE!
The hardest part with how to make a clock from an electrical spool was getting the spool apart. Not because it is a difficult process, but because the nuts and bolts were a little rusty. No worries though, I had Mr. Creativity and our neighbor work on it for me. Ended up being easier (for me) in the end! Ha
After loosening the nuts from the bolts, the spool literally fell apart. Once they were separated I painted the wood with “old linen” chalk paint and then dry brushed on some “snow” white chalk paint. This gave it a weathered look.
Using my Silhouette machine, I cut roman numerals 1-12 (I-XII) using heavy cardstock. These make perfect stencils and I can actually use them a few times each. I simply tape them on the wood and use a sponge brush to dab on black paint.
Don’t have a Silhouette? Use these roman numeral stencils!
Once the paint is dry, I sanded the numbers so that they would not look perfect (perfectly imperfect is my thang…). I also added a little dark wax to get a more aged look.
I am thrilled with how this one turned out. This one is going to my neighbor as a thank you for some embroidery she is doing for me.
I hope she likes it!
Or maybe I hope she doesn’t like it and I will just keep it here on Mr. Creativity’s chest of drawers…

How big did you do the roman numerals?
Hey Melissa! I think they were about 4 inches tall.
Did you actually put clock parts in this or is it just to look like a old clock face ?
Hey Patricia! Great question!
The clock doesn’t have any working parts so it’s just for pretty. But pretty it is! I love the grey color and it would make an awesome piece for over a fireplace.
Thanks SO much for reading and pinning this project!
Love this! When do you put on the gray wood stain. Before or after you paint?
