There’s always a little flip-flop in my stomach when I hear the front door bell ring.
The happy flip is the hope it’s the cute delivery guy dropping off my latest prized package. It’s always a good day when something fun arrives. Especially a new craft toy.
The gut wrenching flop comes from praying it’s not a visitor at the front door.
Or my mother.
Now don’t get me wrong. I love my mama. What don’t love is opening the front door wide to allow a view of the most confused room in our house: The Home Office.
Here’s the proof that the room need a Home Office Update:
See what I mean? This confused room doesn’t know whether to file bills, vacuum the rug, or put on an day-glo orange stocking cap for hunting the wily deer.
Bonus points if you can find the wily deer!
There’s enough wall art to cover that blank spot in the living room. And the foyer.
Don’t even get me started on all the electrical cords, computer manuals, and telephone cords what are crammed into the basket on the bookshelf. Do we even need the telephone cords anymore?
These photographs are after a clean up session. There was twice as much random furniture, boxes, and hunting gear laying around.
So… what’s a mama to do to kickstart this Home Office Update?
Here’s The Plan
1. Ditch the Clutter
Since most of this junk stuff belongs to Honey, he will take a Saturday morning to go through everything. Just in case he comes across something of mine, I will most likely join in the fun.
2. Add storage
There’s a big chance Honey will want/need to hold onto some of his things. Instead of cardboard boxes and ugly plastic containers, I’m thinking a large dresser would be perfect.
3. The “Wooden” Bookshelves
Notice how I said “wooden”? The are really laminate and a little beat up from frequent moving but they aren’t going anywhere. All the bookshelves need is a little styling love and pretty storage.
4. Brighten Up!
There is no overhead lighting in our home office. Since I hate harsh overhead lighting, I’m okay with that. But it’s a pretty dark room so lots of lamps are going to be added to brighten it up.
Maybe even one (or two) of these large lamps will make their way into the Home Office Update.
5. Goodbye Red and Lace!
I love red. Truly.
But in home decor it’s a tad dated. So I’m giving the huge rug to my sister-in-law for her home.
Unfortunately for me, she refuses to take the lovely window treatments. Each of the three windows are covered in white sheers with lace details. Not quite the look I’m going for.
Now I’ve got a bit of a secret about this Home Office Update. It’s really all for me!
I need a place away from the family to plan and write for the blog. Instead of shuffling all my to-do lists, notebooks and planners around the house I want to spot to leave it all until I’m ready to sit down again.
A small desk between the two big windows would be a dream.
I can’t wait to show you which direction this confused Home Office Update is going to go. There’s great plans in the works for making this another space to smile about in our home.
Here’s a hint: The deer head stays!

I love all your plans for this room! I can’t wait to see what you do with it. It is a great space for a home office.
OMG! You had me laughing out loud. But this is not funny. My office is the same way. We are in the process of moving things around and you and I have about the same goals. We are transforming our dining room into an office/craft space and my biggest fear is that it will look a mess all of the time. (and that would be my mess, not my hubby’s) so…I am going to have to be uber organized and keep it that way. I can’t wait to see how your space turns out. I am definitely a new follower! Thanks for brightening up my day!
Ooh, I can’t wait! We’ve been working around Hubs hunting gear too. It’s so hard to store some of it b/c some can be shoved in a storage area while other parts need climate control. Anyway, so excited that you’re going to get your own space!
You know I’m always excited about a room makeover. Can’t wait to see how you unconfuse your room!
I can’t wait to see what you do with the window treatments. I currently have naked windows and would love something new.
I think your plan of attack sounds great. I have a study off of my living room. I think it was designed to be the formal dining room, but formal we are not. It is my kids art area, my work area, the library, and seen wonderfully from the front door and living room. The room that naturally has the most “stuff” going on is seen the easiest. It is hard to stay on top of it. Good luck!
This looks like it will be a great project! Thanks for linking up!!
Hello Ashley! Sounds like a good plan. I look forward to seeing the after pictures. 😉
Can’t wait to see the results!
Thanks, Patricia! Our Home Office is going to be fabulous! 😉
