How to Make a Family Command Center
Step One: Find The Best Place
The best place for our Family Command Center is between our laundry room and door to the garage. We will pass by it multiple times a day so it’s easy for us (me) to see what’s going on.
It was a small, wasted space that was just waiting to be useful.
The first step in planning a family command center is to find the best place. Take a few minutes and think about these things:
- Where do you have space in your house for a command center?
- Where can it go where you will see it everyday? Multiple times of the day?
Step Two: Make a List of What You Need in a Command Center
A family command center isn’t going to work for you if it doesn’t contain all that you need on a daily basis. Make a list of what your family really needs to keep organized.
Here’s my list:
Command Center Must Haves
Monthly Calendar
Meal Planning Menu
Spot for Children’s Work and Schedules
Pilot G2 Pens and DIY Pen Holder
Large Bulletin Board
Step Three: Gather Your Supplies
When it came time to build my family command center I went straight to my overcrowded craft room. That’s where I found a $3.00 thrift store bulletin board I had stashed away.
The bulletin board looked pretty bad. Fortunately, it wasn’t anything a piece of pretty fabric and a can of spray paint couldn’t fix.
Next I picked up a simple calendar and inexpensive five cookie sheets.
After that I headed to my favorite place: Target!
I’m a pen and paper kinda girl but it has to be the right type of pen. Pilot G2 Pens are my favorite! I adore all the colors because they let me pick one specific color for each of our three kiddos.
At Target I found multiple Pilot G2 Pens collection options to help me customize my command center calendar – G2 Premium, G2 Target Fashion Collection, G2 Metallics. The package I bought included 12 vibrant colors and came in a fine point size however, there are four different point sizes and 15 gorgeous colors in the Pilot G2 line.
Right now there’s an easy to find endcap at Target with all the Pilot G2 Pens and other organizational items you’ll need!
Pilot G2 Pens helps me feel organized and on top of all my life’s craziness, they make me feel like an everyday overachiever!

Step Four: Make a Family Command Center
Start by mapping out where you would like everything to go then use repositionable mounting strips to hang everything.
I love the finished product! Careful planning and using inexpensive items helped me to build a command center that will organize our family.
Take a peek at all the organized goodness!
The children really like having their own message board. I really like having a spot to hang all those field trip permission forms I can never keep track of.
See what I mean about loving Pilot G2 Pens? A color coded calendar makes getting my children organized so much easier.
Meal planning is another must make happen goal for our family to be organized. This $1.00 cookie sheet makes the perfect place for keeping our menu!

I love the DIY Pen Holder I created from a recycled box and supplies I already had. Free projects are the best, aren’t they?

Camping is our family’s most favorite thing to do. The children insisted on putting this adorable Let’s Go on an Adventure free printable from Kristi at I Should Be Mopping The Floor.
It’s the perfect spot to add a lyric from one of our favorite songs. The two little ones and I sing this all the time in car line karaoke!
I hope this DIY command center helps you stay organized and keep your family’s schedule, meal plan, and more all in one place.

Such a cute idea !!!!
That totally works for me Ashley and I’m loving the red you used, it’s such a lovely “action” color. The only thing I’d add would be a hook or three to hang our keys. They always seem to go missing in our house 😉
Hooks for keys would be a great addition to the family command center. Thanks so much for the suggestion!
This turned out great. I love how they are displayed on the wall. I would love it if you shared this great idea at a link party I am hosting. Hope to see you there. Have a great week.
Thanks so much for the invite, Vanessa!
I love how bright and colorful you made your new family command center!! So many GREAT ideas!!
Best wishes for the most organized year yet!!
Thanks so much, Diane! Red is my favorite color so I try to add that in whenever I can.
