Use a recycled box, white glue and scrapbook paper to create a DIY Pen Holder. This recycled craft is perfect for organizing a Family Command Center.
This year I am determined to keep our family more organized!
One family calendar really helps with this. So does having a different pen color for each member of our family really helps to keep us organized.
But that means at least five pens have to be readily accessible when I need to add events to our family calendar. That’s a lots of pens!
Since all those pens have to go somewhere so I made this DIY Pen Holder from a recycled checkbook box.
It fits perfectly on our new Family Command Center. Click here to how to create your own command center.

How to Make a DIY Pen Holder
Step One: Recycle an Empty Box
Begin this diy pen holder by taking a minute to dig through your recycling. Search for a small but sturdy box to hold your pens.
I couldn’t find exactly what I needed in the recycling but then I remembered one of our checkbook box was almost empty. I knew it would make a perfect inexpensive pen caddy!
Step Two: Construct the Pen Holder
Next cut the recycled box in half with scissors.
Then use white glue to attach the two pieces together as shown below. Two clothespins made great devices for holding it together while the boxes completely dried.
Step Three: Decorate the DIY Pen Holder
Use your favorite scrapbook paper to cover the outside of the box. Simply trace each side to make a pattern, cut out your pieces, and use white glue to attach the paper.
Cover all the edges with fun washi tape.
Never heard of washi tape? It’s one of my favorite craft supplies! Click here to see a few examples.
Don’t forget to add a piece of scrapbook paper to cover the back of the pen holder!
Step Four: Add the Pen Caddy to the Family Command Center
Use repositionable mounting strips to add the pen caddy to your Family Command Center. I love these things too. They make gallery walls a snap!
I love the color and pattern the scrapbook paper adds to the command center wall. It makes the perfect spot for holding pens, small pieces of paper, and sticky notes.

Great idea! I love upcycles and this is a clever one. We don’t have a command center and it’s certainly something that my kitchen could use.
I love grabbing something from the recycling bin and making it something useful too! So happy I used that empty checkbook box to make a pen holder. I’ve got TOO many pens!
Having a family command center right as we are walking out to begin our day has made a world of difference. I always check out the day or week as I’m walking by.
I love recycle projects and it’s so clever to create a pencil holder using cardboard.
Thanks, Erlene! That recycled box made the perfect pen holder for our new command center.
How did you secure it to the
Wall?
Hey Kim! I used Command strips to secure everything to the wall. I use those things everywhere!
