Take that outdated thrift store print with simple DIY Paint by Numbers Technique. It’s a creative hand painted project for adding DIY wall art to your home!
Pinterest is a fabulous tool. It allows you to gather ideas and inspiration for hundreds of thousands of projects.
The problem is that Pinterest so vast that sometimes you find an awesome idea that you would like to try and no matter how hard you search you never find it again.
So you shrug your shoulders and… oh look at that fabulous Mason jar project!
But there are some ideas that stick with you.
For years.
That’s the story of this DIY art project. I have thought about painting my own paint by numbers for years. I even bought a thrift store framed art to get started.
One day I finally sat down and made it happen. I hope you love my DIY art project as much as I do!
All you really need to update a Goodwill Print with DIY Paint by Numbers is a floral print, acrylic paints, and creativity.

DIY Paint by Number Technique: Materials Needed
- outdated floral painting in need of a facelift
- a variety of green acrylic paint for the leaves
- a variety of acrylic paint for the flowers
- white acrylic paint
- paint brushes
This beauty was less than $4 at the local thrift store and was perfect for the DIY art project I had in mind.
Before beginning I gave the print and frame a good cleaning with a damp cloth. Then I gathered all the materials I would need to complete the thrifty art project.
DIY Paint by Numbers: Instructions
The paint by numbers technique uses large blotches of color to create images. So the goal isn’t to repaint the floral print exactly but to step back study the shape of each flower and leaf. The plan is to cover each shape with one color then go back and add a few details with lighter and darker colors.
Step One: Start with the Leaves
Start by choosing dark green to paint over the dark green leaves and vines. As the first layer of paint dried I began to layer the lighter greens on top to give the leaves depth.
Take your time and fill in all the leaves and vines. Follow the shape and lines of the floral print.
Step Two: Focus on the Flowers
The pink flowers weren’t working for me. I choose a peach/coral color palette to tie into the colors of our dining room.
Using three different tones of coral paint over each of the flowers.
Step Three: Add Details and Highlights to your DIY Artwork
After the flowers and leaves have dried, add lots of details using lighter and darker colors of paint.
Remember this is not an exact science. Just have fun adding different shapes on each flower and leaf to give it more dimension.
That’s the beauty of paint by numbers!
The corals and peaches of the newly painted picture add lovely pops of color to our dining room. They go perfectly with my spring floral arrangement. {Click here} here to see exactly how I created it!
