Cheapest DIY Curtain Rods Ever {Finials too}!

Looking to add customized window treatments to your home without breaking the bank? Then you are going to love this tutorial for the Cheapest DIY Curtain Rods Ever!

MUST PIN tutorial for the Cheapest DIY Curtain Rods Ever {Finials too} by 3 Little Greenwoods Tutorial for making your own DIY Curtain Rods from simple supplies! #DIYCurtainRod #DIYFinials

I have to admit that I am a wee bit of a hoarder when it comes to home decor supplies.

Here’s an example: Even though we have no double windows in our entire home I still haven’t gotten rid of all six sets of double window curtain rods from our last house.

Turns out hoarding can be a good thing. Because I’ve upcycled those useless curtain rods into the Cheapest DIY Curtain Rods Ever {Finials too}!

Window treatments have always scared me a little bit. I thought they had to be expensive, permanent fixtures in a home so committing to them was hard. Then I began to make my own no-sew DIY window curtains and I’ve never looked back!

First there were the window panels for the dining room then the kitchen windows and now these fabulous window curtains for our Southern Gentleman’s Home Office.

The home office curtains were less than $15 a window for fabulous, designer looking window treatments. There was no way I was going to break the bank purchasing expensive rods to hang my diy curtains!

DIY Curtain Rods: Materials Needed

Leftover Curtain Rod

Or Inexpensive Electrical Conduit

Small Coat Hooks {these work great!}

How to Make DIY Curtain Rods

Since I already had the leftover curtain rods the hunt was on to find hooks that would hold them. The rods are 3/4″ wide so any hooks had to be wide enough to hold them.

I found the perfect sized coat hooks at my local discount store. $7.00 for six hooks! Plus the package was the perfect number for my three home office windows!

Don’t have time to search around town? Here’s the same hooks online!

Step One: Install the Curtain Rod Hooks

Honey installed the coat hooks about two inches from the bottom of the crown molding. Adding the rods was a simple was fitting them in place.

Now I know that you may be thinking this entire DIY Curtain Rod tutorial doesn’t apply to you because you don’t have leftover curtain rods laying around.

But remember my Super Cheap Secret to Bay Window Curtain Rods? You can purchase inexpensive electrical conduit and have it cut to size for your window’s measurement. A little spray paint and you are good to go!

Next let me show you how I made DIY finials to go with my DIY curtain rods.

DIY Curtain Finials: Materials Needed

4 1/2″ Half Styrofoam Balls {I used these}

Brown Acrylic Paint

Gold Acrylic Craft Paint {love this paint}

Painter’s Tape

Because the DIY curtain rods sit so close to the wall there isn’t much room for traditional finials.

These 4 1/2″ Half Styrofoam Balls* are a great solution for their size and shape. But white styrofoam balls next to my new pretty curtains would never do.

The DIY finials got several coats of brown craft paint.

Then a little bit of gold craft paint on top. I just rubbed on a small bit of gold paint with my fingers.

The styrofoam is so lightweight just a small piece of painter’s tape holds it in place on the wall.

    This is a great idea, a great solution I want to use. I just dont see how the “rod” fits into the styrofoam balls??

      Hey Sarah!

      Great question! The styrofoam balls do not fit into the rods at all. They are simple taped on the wall at the ends of the rods. It’s a total illusion.

      Thank you so much for reading!

    After spending hours at the home store trying to find the right size and seeing the over inflated prices of curtain rods, this article is a life saver. Thank you! Heading back to the store to pick up some electrical conduit.
