Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with an easy Leprechaun Hat that’s a DIY Door Hanger! It’s an easy Spring craft project that is simple and inexpensive to make.
I’m excited to share this St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Hat with 19 of my favorite DIY bloggers! We are teaming up for a Green St. Patrick’s Day {Home Tours and Decor} blog hop and you are going to love all of the inspiration you will find throughout the week.
Each day there will be new of colorful projects to inspire your Spring home decorations. Links to all of the fabulous projects and home tours you see in the featured image are at the end of this blog post.
I’ve already made one for football season, to celebrate the boys’ love of basketball, and for Easter. Creating my own DIY door hangers is totally becoming my thing.
So I couldn’t resist making one for St. Patrick’s Day this year!
You are going to love how simple this Spring craft is and you won’t believe how inexpensive it is to make!
Leprechaun Hat Door Hanger ~ Supplies
white foam core
serrated knife
1″ wide masking tape
green spray paint
scissors
collection of green and yellow ribbon
hot glue gun {my favorite one}*
Leprechaun Hat Door Hanger ~ Instructions
Step One – Begin the leprechaun hat with a poster sized piece of foam core. Use a pencil to draw the outline of a leprechaun hat. My hat measures 24″ x 18″. I actually could have made two door hangers with one piece of poster sized foam core.
Step Two – Use a serrated knife to cut out the shape. Yes, grab a steak knife from your kitchen drawer. It’s the best tool for cutting out foam core door hangers.
Step Three – Prep the edges of the leprechaun hat for spray painting by using 1″ masking tape and following this technique.
Step Four – Spray paint the shape with green spray paint. Be careful to use several light coats to cover the entire piece. Don’t forget the edges!
Step Five – After the green spray paint has dried, cover the front of the leprechaun hat with adhesive spray glue*. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for best results.
Step Six – Next grab the bag of green moss*. Remove half the moss from the bag then fluff it up by tearing it apart. Lots of fluffy moss makes covering the door hanger easier.
Firmly push the fluffy moss into the sprayed on glue. Must sure to cover the entire shape with moss.
As you can see, Tootsie (our 5 year old daughter) was all about helping with this project!
Once the leprechaun hat has been covered with moss use scissors to trim any excess from the edges.
Step Seven – Add a bow with wired ribbon and the St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Hat is complete! I simply raided my ribbon stash in my craft room to make the bow.
Bow making can be hard so I love to use a Bowdabra Bow Making Tool* or this easy bow making technique.
Finish the St. Patrick’s Day project by hot gluing ribbons and bow onto the front of the leprechaun hat. Hot glue a ribbon to the back for hanging.
I love the texture the green moss adds to the St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Hat! It’s vibrant color simply pops off our red front door!
The door hanger made me so happy that I couldn’t resist picking up a new doormat and a few flowers to add to our front porch.
I mentioned at the beginning of this post how inexpensive this project was to make. I only had to purchase four items and there is enough leftover to make another DIY door hanger for a friend.
Here’s exactly what I spent:

How cute! Your leprechaun hat reminds me of spring and is so festive!
Hey Ashley – your leprechaun hat is just precious! We heart all things moss and this door hanger is perfect! So happy to share the tour with you!
So cute, Ashley! The green is so striking against your red door, and I’m seriously jealous that you already have pansies!
We have beautiful weather already here in South Carolina! I’m just crossing my fingers that I remember to water the pansies to keep them alive. 🙂
Ashley,
I love this hat! It’s such an Irish tradition to use natural goods in celebrating the day of St. Patrick. I’m hosting a St. Patty’s Day dinner and I’m going to get this hat finished for my front door. What a cute way to welcome my guests!
I can’t believe you already have flowers out… we still have snow on the ground! 🙂
Love this, very original! And you’re right about front door decor not being limited to just wreaths. Visiting from Party In Your PJs party.
