This month’s Make It Challenge is all about turkeys! To celebrate my favorite bird and Thanksgiving I created a DIY Thanksgiving Apron with Turkey Applique to wear while whipping up dishes for our traditional feast.
I can’t wait to share this Thanksgiving apron with you then you must hop over to visit all of the fabulously creative other #MakeIt Challenge Turkey Projects!
Because I am so messy when I cook, aprons are my best friend. But instead of wearing my old, stained favorite I wanted to create something new and fun for Thanksgiving.
Isn’t Miss Turkey the cutest thing? This adorable turkey applique apron was whipped up with a store bought apron, fabric from stash, and a sheet of fusible adhesive.
I’m proud to say that the apron was made without the use of a fancy die cut machine. Just simple tools like an iron plus fusible adhesive. {But I’m really hoping Santa brings me a die cut machine!}
Supplies Needed for Thanksgiving Turkey Apron
- Apron
- Various coordinating fabrics
- Squeezable puffy craft paint
- Large roll of fusible adhesive
- Iron
- Buttons for eyes
- Yellow felt for beak
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Start with a plain apron made specially for decorating. Hobby Lobby has a large selection of these aprons. Plus using the 40% off coupon brings the price down to $3.00.
Next I used a bowl and glass from the kitchen to decide the size and placement of the turkey. See? I told you I am going old school with this project. 😉
By tracing the bowl and glass, I created a turkey body. The feather template is basically a rectangle with one rounded end.
The turkey apron will need coordinating fabrics for the body and feathers. Gathering a bunch of pretty fabrics was easy since I have a huge stash in my craft room. In the end I used 5 different fabrics (2 solids and 3 prints).
Below you can see the fabrics I chose and my turkey feather template I created. If you are a supply hoarder crafter like me I bet you’ve got plenty of fabrics in your stash too.
Follow the instructions on the package to apply the fusible adhesive to the back of each piece of fabric. Use the templates you created to trace then cut out the turkey shapes.
After all the pieces were cut out I played a bit with the arrangement of the feathers until I was happy.
To be positive the feathers stayed where they were placed on the turkey apron each piece was taped onto the back of the original turkey shape . Then I traced around the body’s edge to know where I needed to cut each feather.
Double check the placement of each piece then begin to adhere them to the apron using an iron. Make sure to follow the directions included with the fusible adhesive packaging.
When each piece was securely attached to the apron I used bronze puffy dimensional craft paint to outline Miss Turkey.
Small pieces of felt made the beak and buttons were used for her eyes. To make sure no one confuses her for a Tom Turkey, she got a sweet little rolled fabric rose for her head.
Another rolled fabric flower was placed at the top. Hot glue secured them both in place.
I can’t wait to show off my DIY Thanksgiving Apron with Turkey Applique during our big family feast!
