DIY No Sew Christmas Tree Skirt was the perfect solution for hiding the ugly metal base of our new artificial Christmas tree. It’s no sew but better than that it started with a pre-made tree skirt from the local craft store!
Twelve months ago I wrote “Make a Tree Skirt” on my never ending to-do list.
You see our family had just purchased our fancy smancy first artificial Christmas tree. The new tree was full of lights, lush, and perfectly shaped. It was so much better than the very sad artificial Christmas tree I updated for less than $10 the year before.
But it had the ugliest stand ever.
I had great plans to creating the most adorable tree skirt to cover those hideous metal legs.
Then Christmas got crazy. I never had the time to make anything crafty much less a tree skirt from scratch. When this year rolled around I had a plan!
Come let me show you how I made an adorable DIY No Sew Christmas Tree Skirt!
DIY No Sew Christmas Tree Skirt ~ Supplies Needed
pre-made tree skirt ~ this one would be a great starting point!
Christmas felt ornaments and embellishments
hot glue gun ~ my favorite
There was no way I was starting from scratch so off to Hobby Lobby I went. There I picked up a pre-made Christmas tree skirt and several packages from Hobby Lobby’s Make It Christmas collection for my DIY tree skirt. The total for all these pieces was under $25.
How to Make a DIY No Sew Christmas Tree Skirt
Step one: Start with a premade tree skirt
As soon as I got home, I spread the tree skirt on the kitchen table and began to play with the arrangement by adding more ornaments on the rows. My decorating philosophy {especially for Christmas} is more is better!
Without the extra ornaments the tree skirt looked sparse and we couldn’t have that!
Step Two: Create ornaments with felt embellishments
Each of the new felt ornaments were prettied up with pre-made Christmas shapes, rick-rack, and bits of extra felt. The cutesy little snowflakes, deer, and gingerbread men made felt ornament making a snap!
In fact, I’d love to make more of these felt ornaments for our big tree. They are too cute!
The little deer standing in the green grass is my favorite. Love the little pink mushroom! It was made by cutting a simple mushroom shape from scrap felt from my stash.
Step Three: Add a no sew ruffle
Before the ornaments were added I flipped the tree skirt and hot glued a ruffle of red & white striped fabric to the bottom. Simply use pinking shears to cut a 9″-12″ strip of fabric then use the “pinch and fold” method to hot glue a ruffle down.
Oh wait, let me explain the “pinch and fold” method a bit more.
It means to glue down 2″-3″ of fabric, pinch a small amount of fabric between your fingers, fold it down, secure it in place with hot glue, then start the process over as you work your way around the skirt. Pinching and folding over the fabric created the ruffles.
No sewing needed! Yay!
Once the red & white striped fabric ruffle was added I was well on my way to have a Semi-Homemade Tree Skirt!
Next all of the new felt ornaments were hot glued into place and colorful rick-rack was used to cover up the skinny white cord.
Then I couldn’t resist putting a red gingham ruffled ribbon along the bottom. Remember: More is Better!
