Don’t let the after Christmas decorating blues get you down. Add a pops of color and lights with these Kitchen Hutch Decorating Ideas for Winter! It’s simple winter decorating with cardinals, greenery, and twinkling lights.
I adore filling our home with Christmas decorations.
After the holidays are over it always makes me sad to take down the trees (we had three this year) and pack away all the brightly colored decorations.
But I got inspired this year to do something a little different.
The inspiration came at my mother’s house on Christmas Eve. In her foyer there was a ginormous Christmas tree filled with ribbons, shiny balls, and bright red cardinals.
If you’ve been hanging out with me for long, you already know that red is my favorite color. And all those little red cardinals gave me a great decorating idea for the kitchen!
There were so many cardinals I didn’t think she would mind letting me borrow a few for a little kitchen hutch decorating ideas for winter. Besides the sweet little birds match perfectly with the Lenox Winter Greetings Everyday Christmas collection my mother started for me several years ago.
Once I snagged three little birds I gathered together a few supplies for decorating a kitchen hutch. No, I didn’t take them off her tree on Christmas Eve… but I did think about it.

Decorating our kitchen hutch for winter began with placing my dish collection in the plate rail along the back. Dinner plates and salad plates were stacked together to add more color and pattern.
Then the decorating fun began. Come and see what I’ve done!
A black lantern I borrowed from the front porch adds height and extra light to the kitchen. Topped with a bow it fits right in with the dishes.
I cut a 6′ Christmas garland in half then wove it among the lantern and dishes on the kitchen hutch shelves. A few evergreen branches from Honey’s Christmas tree and the arbor vitae in the backyard help fill in the inexpensive garland.
This same trick helped to make our Christmas front porch flower boxes look so pretty! {Click here} for the complete tutorial.
Battery operated lights tucked into the garland make the hutch so pretty at night.
The stars of the show are my Mama’s red cardinals placed throughout. My favorite is this little guy tucked into a twig nest!
My mama even let me borrow this sweet little cardinal pinecone ornament from her Christmas tree. It makes a perfect hanger for the kitchen hutch knob.
Now our house won’t be so dark and empty feeling after the trees and Christmas decorations have been put away. Those after Christmas blues aren’t getting me down this year!

I love the look of the red cardinals against the greenery too! Makes me so happy to see my kitchen hutch all decorated for winter!
I love this so much. My mom has the same taste and it makes me feel all warm and cozy.
Happy New Year. 🙂
Thanks so much, Kari! All that color makes me happy-happy!
I have plain red pzaltkraft stone wear I use for Christmas. It is displayed in my china hutch and I use it through Feb. Perfect for winter and Valentines. I just mix it with my white dishes to keep it from being too much red.
