Add some cuteness to your Christmas door with this tutorial for a Christmas Stocking Door Hanger. Don’t pay BIG bucks for Christmas front door decorations! This is a Dollar Store Christmas project you will love!
There is this fancy online door hanger boutique that I love. It’s filled with brightly painted pieces that I adore and want to buy. But there’s simply not room in my budget.
So I did what I always do when there’s something I want but can’t afford it.
I DIY’ed my own Christmas stocking door hanger! It’s a handpainted Christmas decoration that you can make from a Dollar Store supply. Let me show you how I did it.

Christmas Stocking Door Hanger ~ Supplies
retractable craft knife
1″ wide masking tape
white and green spray paint
wired ribbon
This whole stocking door hanger project started with a thrift store find. It was a felt covered Christmas stocking wall decor piece that I quickly snatched up! Instantly I could envision it stripped down and painted as a super cute stocking door hanger.
Sadly, all that was underneath that felt was a flimsy piece of cardboard. It would never hold up to all the painting I wanted to do to it.
So that got tossed aside and the stocking door hanger project got started again the same way I did this one and this one and this one!
Christmas Stocking Door Decor ~ Instructions
Step One: Create the Stocking Shape
Since making over the thrift store stocking didn’t work, I simply laid it on a Dollar Store piece of foam core and traced around it.
This classic Christmas shape isn’t hard to draw. Practice a few times on newspaper or another large piece of paper then free hand draw on the foam core.
HINT: Don’t press down too hard with a pencil on the foam core. It will leave a permanent mark!
Step Two: Prep the Foam Core Cutout
Foam core alone is not an ideal painting surface. Grab a poster sized piece of foam core, a roll of 1″ masking tape, and CLICK HERE to get the easy tutorial for prepping the foam core.
*** Pay attention to Step Two! ***
Step Three: Spray Paint a Base Coat
Once the foam core shape is prepped with masking tape you are ready to spray paint. To make the Christmas stocking door hanger pop on our red front door I choose white spray paint for the top and green spray paint for the bottom.
Take your time with this spray painting step! Several light coats of spray paint is the best for full coverage.
Step Four: Add Lots of Details with Craft Paint
Now the painting fun begins! All the details on this Christmas stocking door hanger is what makes it so fabulous!
I really loving using this set of acrylic paints for all my art projects. It’s been used to paint abstract art work, Ikat pumpkins, and on this paint by numbers technique.
First, use black craft paint to create a bold border all around the stocking. Don’t forget to paint the stocking edges with black paint.
Add stripes to the stocking cuff and large dots to the bottom. A ruler can be used to make sure the stripes are even. A small cup makes a great circle template!
Make the edges POP with one more stripe of blue plus lots of dots using white craft paint.
Create highlights on the large red dots with white and black paint.
Step Five: Add a Fabulous Christmas Bow
Add an easy bow with wired ribbon and the Christmas stocking door hanger is complete. I love to use a Bowdabra Bow Making Tool or this easy bow making technique {this is one of my most popular DIY posts!}.
I couldn’t love my unique Christmas front door decoration more! It’s bright colors pop off our red front door and it totally looks like a picked it up from a fancy boutique!
Please note that this door hanger is safely hung under a deep covered front porch. Rain would not be kind to it so choose a good spot for including it in your outdoor christmas decorations.
Isn’t the stocking door decor just fabulous on a Christmas front porch at night?
