Our family is in love with the DIY Container Garden we Honey built! It was so much fun to plan which plants we were going to grow.
We just have one little problem: varmints!
Each day the children check on the garden to see how much the plants have grown. One afternoon Big Boy ran inside to report something had killed our plants!
Sure enough several of our pepper plants were trashed!
Those little trampled plants made us mad! We hadn’t built a container, hauled in loads of dirt filled with Kricket Krap, and carefully chose perfect plants for nothing! We had to protect our plant babies from the varmints!
We realized the only way to salvage this corner of the garden was to re-plant. Back to Home Depot Honey went for more sweet peppers and a few okra plants. But as I was digging the holes for replanting I noticed something red buried deep in the dirt.
Guess who our garden varmint is? Yep, sweet yellow dog!
She is famous for stealing and burying all of the shoes, socks, and now shirts that happen to be left outside. I knew she thought we made the garden just for her!
To keep Varmint Dog out, Honey decided to try wrapping our little garden in 4 foot tall chicken wire. But without a framework of support it was too flimsy.
And tacky. I hated it.
Off to Plan B.
Determined not to head back to Home Depot to spend another $50 (or more) for varmint control, we scavenged the yard for suitable fencing material.
Okay. This looks tacky too but at least I can reach the plants over the fence. 😉
Here’s to hoping the rain and sunshine work their magic and the Varmint Dog finds a more suitable place to bury her treasures!
Now… if I could only find Tootsie’s new white tennis shoes.

Your comments totally make my day! They give me huge motivation to keep creating and having fun with my 3 Little Greenwoods!
I link up with these fun parties!
Ok that’s totally not funny, but I am giggling a little bit. Yeah we did the chicken wire bit, I don’t love it at all but it’s kept the cats from using it as a litter box…someone in the neighborhood feeds all the strays and they like our yard for some reason! LOL
I hated the chicken wire! It looked awful wrapped around my pretty garden (not that all the stuff we have piled up there looks any better). 😉
I am so jealous you get to plant already. We have about a month to wait (it is still fairly chilly here too). It all looks so pretty and GREEN!!!! We have problems with bunnies eating our stuff all the time. Chicken wire works good for them too.
We are so lucky to be where it is warm and we are able to plant now. We have a huge “Daddy Bunny” that lives in our front yard. That is who we thought had gotten into the garden. Silly Yellow Dog!
Ashley, what another great idea. We have the deer to worry about. Your puppy dog is so cute!
My puppy is a stinker! We just knew that the squirrels and rabbits were the ones to blame for the trashed pepper plants!
That is too funny! Luckily she didn’t dig up the entire garden!! She is so cute, she has that sweet little innocent face!
We are very lucky that is didn’t dig up the whole garden! Maybe she ran out of goodies to bury. 😉
Made me laugh, yet still practical info! Pinned.
Hey Patti!
I am so thrilled that you stopped by and left comment love! Your blog is always so much fun to read!
And yes… our big yellow dog is a shoe stealing, shirt burying varmint! But we love her so much! 😉
Haha…poor buddy. 🙂
Thanks for joining the Link Up this week!
Funny story! Okay, you might not be laughing too hard, but you gotta admit it’s kinda funny! I’m glad you found a way to keep the dog out – let’s hope that’s the worst of your gardening woes this year!
Yes, we are hoping keeping Yellow Dog out of the garden is the worst of our garden woes! {and it was pretty funny!}
what a great looking garden, and that chicken wire looks like it will work!
Anything we can do to keep the Sweet Yellow Dog out of my garden!

Great idea. Sweet dog was just protecting what she thought was hers. Thank you for linking up to Tips and Tricks.

So far we have been able to keep our sweet dog out of the pepper plants with our makeshift fence. Thanks for the comment love!
