It has been two months since our family began acting like farmers and growing veggies in our DIY Container Garden. Our oldest son and I want to show you how our garden is Blooming into Goodness!
The original plan we followed recommended placing one, two, or even more plants per one foot square. We might need a little bit more space than originally planned. Make sure to check out how we built our container garden {here} then the planning and planting of the garden {here}.
See how crowded the bed has become already? It’s only the end of May!
The squash plants are one of the plants that have grown huge! They are vining out all over and have blocked the sun from several of the romaine lettuce heads. One of our favorite after school activities is to search for new veggies!
Several of the baby squash have fallen off. I’m not sure if it’s because of too much water or not enough. Crossing our fingers the new squash hang on and grow big!
The cucumber vine finally taking off after almost dying at the beginning of the season from an attack from aphids (or some other sneaky veggie eating pest).
“Look, Mama! Pickles!” Sweet boy will realize soon enough that you need to grow cucumbers first.
Check out the tomatoes! We have such high hopes for these incredibly tall, blossom filled plants. They are taller than the Kid Created Garden Trellis the boys helped me build! Go {here} to see that fun child friendly project.
So excited to see these small tomatoes growing!
These delicate purple flowers are pole beans. I think.
Someone (that would be me) accidentally threw away the seeds packets. Hush… don’t tell Honey. He wants a full report of which varieties grew the best at the end of the year.
So… how’s your garden growing? I’d love to see your veggies and hear your tips to growing an awesome garden!
Don’t forget to check out our other DIY Container Gardening Posts!

Thank you so much, Marie! Our family is truly excited to grow veggies. Crossing my fingers the children will be just as excited about eating what we grow!

Hi Ashley!
Your garden looks great! Love seeing so many vegetables starting to grow. YAY!
Gardens can be so rewarding and fun!
Our little garden is doing great too. We picked our first cluster of orange tomatoes this morning. I hope to add them to a simple pasta dish over the weekend.
Thanks so much for sharing!
Have a wonderful Memorial weekend,
Suzanne
Hey Suzanne! We are growing orange cherry tomatoes and they are beginning to ripen. So exciting!
Your garden looks amazing! Gardens are sooo much fun for littles! Hehe “pickles”! That’a adorable! My little guy insists that we’re farmers…not quite though! LOL I will let him believe it though
Girl~ our ‘pickles’ are growing fast! I’m going to have to make some and tell everyone all about it! 😉
Ashley it looks so fabulous, yay for all of your hard work blooming and growing!!
Thanks so much Jen! I am in love with your Mommy Reality Challenge. Hopefully I can remember to post and link up this week.

Great work. Do you have a problem with those squash bugs that get inside the stems of the squash, pumpkins, etc? What do you do about that? Take care, Linda
I have no idea what to do about stinkin’ squash bugs! My sister-in-law says you have to split the wine open and dig/cut the worm out. Gross!
Your vegetables look great. I think growing your own produce is one of the smartest things we can do for our health and teaching our children to do so is truly a gift to them. Thanks for sharing – love your pictures. Visiting from Homemade Link Up Party. Have a healthy happy day!
Hey Marla! We have been amazed at how our children have enjoyed gardening and are totally willing to eat anything that come from our “farm”. Thanks for the comment love!

We have a similar layout and love it! Of course, being Italian and loving pesto, mine is overflowing with basil. Fortunately, we have two other areas, larger ones with more veggies. I love this time of year…thanks for sharing!
I just can wait to get veggies from the garden!
My boys were yelling from the yard this afternoon about how many “pickles” we had grown! Too cute!

You’re garden looks wonderful. I also use the SFG method and love that you can grow SO much in such a small space. My squash plants did the same thing last year (fruit falling off with rot at the end). In my garden it was end rot due to a calcium deficiency. I added powdered egg shells to the soil and that helps prevent it. This year I loaded the garden with it. I figured it couldn’t hurt. 🙂 I found you at the Pretty Pintastic Party. I pinned this to my garden board. Good luck with your garden. You’ll have be pulling all kinds of yumminess out of it very soon.
Oh thanks for the tip about the squash needing calcium! I wonder if crushed egg shells would work just as well?
Happy Gardening!

Did you ever try this and how did it work out if you did? We had quite a few tomatoes that got rotten on the bottom last year! And those squash bugs… any tips on how to prevent or get rid of those?
How exciting to see your vegetables coming through. Thanks for linking up to Sweet and Savoury Sunday, stop by and link up again. Have a great day!!
We are loving our fresh veggies! Thanks for the sweet comment and the fun party!

I’ve never attempted to grow squash plants but after reading this article I’m going to give it a try!
