The secret is out! We are going to see Mickey Mouse!
I’ve been talking about our Disney World trip for weeks now so I bet you are wondering exactly how we shared this awesome news with our kids. A simple “surprise” would never do! Here’s how we told our children our Disney World vacation {The Big Reveal}!
Since we have three children, the big reveal had to include each one of them in some way. I didn’t want any crying about how one kid got more action than the other.
So I gathered three separate items for them to unwrap.
- #1 – Our box of MagicBands
- #2 – A Countdown Chain
- #3 – Fat Sharpies for Character Autograph Books
Now my numbering system might be a tad confusing. Instead of meaning the number in which the gift would be opened, the numbers correspond with the children’s birth order.
- #1 – Big Boy {10 year old}
- #2 – Little boy {7 year old}
- #3 – Tootsie {4 year old}
Each item was placed in a box and wrapped. The children’s numbers were taped to the outside of the box. I actually wrote their names instead of the numbers on the boxes but didn’t want to show you that. There’s crazies out there, don’t you know?
I grabbed a medium sized box from the stash of Amazon boxes that have been arriving and began to fill it with the reveal gifts and lots of filler.
The first gift to go in on the bottom was #1 The MagicBands. Next went #2 The Countdown Chain. Then #3 The Fat Sharpies on top. Each reveal gift was separated with lots of tissue paper and crinkle filler.
Lastly, the outside box was wrapped and labeled as a gift to Daddy from Mama. This totally threw them off the scent of any sort of surprise. It would never occur to them that this gift wasn’t exactly what it said it was.
On Christmas morning Honey had the honor of opening the first gift of Christmas. One by one the children opened their Disney World vacation reveal gifts. I was on camera duty and got lots of great video but not one photograph. Argh!
Tootsie and Little Boy had no clue what their Disney World reveal gifts meant. Tootsie thought she was going to have an art party on the kitchen table with those big fat Sharpies.
It wasn’t until our 10 year old opened the MagicBands that he realized what the big surprise was!
Ever since Christmas day he has been sitting and imagining all the fun we are going to have. He has a list of attractions we must do. Some more than once.
Tootsie is already pulling off links as we countdown the days until our Disney World trip. The countdown chain is a great visual reminder that “no, we aren’t going TODAY!”
I would love to know if you have any Big Reveal ideas for a Disney World vacation. You never know when I might talk Honey into taking us again!

What a great surprise and idea!!! Love it! Have fun!!! laura
How fun! I love Disney. You’re going to have so much fun! We surprised our kids once with two pictures, one of Walt Disney and the other of Tom Cruise because we were going on a Disney cruise. Hearing the kids try to guess who they were was pretty funny, and they were thrilled when they finally found out where we were going.
Ashley, I love your ideas! It has been my pleasure to share in the secret with you and create another magical vacation for the kiddos. Have so much fun!
Oh, Amber! We had the BEST time! Thank you for all your hard work planning our Disney World vacation. You are the best Disney travel agent ever!

Great idea not labeling the gift to them! I bet that was an awesome reveal. Pinned it!

So fun! Our trips have mostly been during the fall, so I’ve never gotten to do a Christmas surprise with one (also, I have trouble keeping my mouth shut, so I’m bad at surprises ;)). Have a great trip!!
