Simple craft idea for creating an Upcycled T-Shirt Necklace. It’s perfect for showing off your team spirit this Fall!
Fall is in the air which means College Football season is right around the corner! I have to admit that I’m not so much into the game as I am showing up cute to the tailgating party. Sorry Honey!
The perfect outfit with new jewelry is a must. Especially fun jewelry that shows your spirit with team colors. Say hello to my Upcycled T-Shirt Necklace!
This unbelievably easy tutorial uses an old t-shirt and can be totally customized with any colors. Since our team colors are Garnet and Black I chose to create a silvery gray necklace with a garnet burned edge satin flower.
How to Make a T-Shirt Necklace
Start with a small or medium sized t-shirt. Raid your closet, buy one brand new, or head to a local thrift store for a shirt that matches your team’s colors.
Trim off the bottom hem then cut the shirt into 2″ strips.
One at a time stretch the strips until they roll into ropes. The more you pull the thinner the ropes will become.
Create a “knot” over each seam by wrapping it with a 4″ piece of rope. Carefully secure with teeny, tiny dots of glue hot.
Add a fabulous burned edge satin flower. My flower is made of garnet colored satin, a bit of tulle, and iridescent beads in the middle. All the supplies were purchased from Hobby Lobby. Go {here} to learn how to make these versatile accessories.
It was so much fun making the t-shirt necklace I used one of the longer leftover pieces to create a matching bracelet. Simply wrap the rope around your wrist and secure with a “knot” and a bit of hot glue.
Just think of all the different color combinations you can create to show your team spirit this football season.
I have already been through my children’s closets looking for an orange shirt for Auntie and a bright red for Sister-in-Law. The children’s t-shirts will probably work better as a necklace because they would be the perfect length.
Here’s to hoping all our favorite teams win big this season!
See y’all at the tailgate party!

Garnet and black?! Does that mean you are (gasp) a Gamecock fan?! We’re totally die-hard Clemson fans around here, so my necklace would have to be purple and orange. Don’t worry–we can still be friends. 🙂
Love the necklace–I’m going to have to try this!
*Gasp* You’re an orange wearing Tiger?
That’s okay! My auntie is a die-hard Clemson fan and I’ve promised to make her a white and orange necklace to wear to the games this fall. 😉

So I have a confession, I’m not a football fan. I’ve tried, I’ve failed. But I have been invited to a 49ers game in a few weeks. I won’t be the girl at the game wearing team t shirts. (Don’t have any!) But I am the kind of girl who would craft myself a necklace just to wear to a game!
Oh I hope you make one! I need a picture of your game day necklace!
~ Ashley
What a great idea! Very pretty and I love the look of your photos! I pinned this to my DIY board.
Wow! Thanks so much for the compliment on my tutorial pictures. Those can be so hard for me to photograph sometimes.

I’ve always found the shirt necklaces to be pretty trendy. I don’t have a favorite football team though’ baseball is my sport.
You should make one to coordinate with your favorite baseball team. How fun would that be?!
~ Ashley
Oh how cute! I want one now! Hmmmm have to look through our t-shirts now! Gorgeous pic of you doll!
Thanks so much Sweet Friend! It took me forever to get my 10 year old to finally get a photograph of me that I liked! 😉

Love making the tee shirt necklaces – if you use tee shirts without side seams you won’t have to worry about covering up the seams with the faux knots (tho they do look good, too!!)
Next time I am going to seek out shirts without seams! Thanks for the tip!
~ Ashley
I have a bag full of old tshirts that I am looking for projects to do with them! This is just what I needed! Thanks for linking up to Tips and Tricks!

Oh dear…are you a USC fan? Ashley, we can no longer be friends. Haha I’m totally kidding. My husband is a Clemson fan…I couldn’t care less. But I ALMOST went to USC after high school if that’s any consolation. 😉
Lovely necklace no matter the color. I have to admit, USC’s colors are way classier than orange and purple.
Secretly, I couldn’t care less but my honey adores his Gamecocks and I love seeing his excitement! Thank goodness us blondes look great in garnet! 🙂
~ Ashley
Super cute, Ashley!! Great way to display your team pride and look cute at the same time! Thanks for sharing it at our Get Your DIY party! October’s theme is Falling for Fall. I hope you’ll come back on the 5th and share something awesome with us again! XO
