After being a stay-at-home mama for a few years, I am back in the classroom with a dozen of the cutest little preschool kiddos you have ever seen.
Many, many moons ago when I first began teaching I wasn’t prepared for all the sticky sweet {and a little bit germie} hugs. But this time around I’m ready with a Pick Me Up Bag filled with essentials and a DIY Hair Accessory to get me through these crazy preschool days!
Teaching preschool is the best job ever. But it means lots of hands on activities like play dough rolling, pumpkin gutting, and runny nose wiping.
Then there is castle building, wooden block tower crashing, and headache making.
After a busy morning I usually can’t wait to pull my hair back into a ponytail while I patrol the playground during recess. Usually I have plain bobby pins to keep my long bangs off my face but this year I created the prettiest Bird’s Nest Bobby Pins for myself.
The Bird’s Nest Bobby Pins are simple DIY hair accessories to create and make my ponytail feel a little more special! Here is a tutorial for you to make your own:
DIY Hair Accessory ~ Supplies Needed
- 24 gauge jewelry wire
- various beads
- silver bobby pins with pads
- jewelry glue
- wire cutters & pliers
Bird’s Nest Bobby Pin ~ Instructions
Start with a 16″-24″ length of wire, crimp the end of the wire using pliers, and string three beads. The crimp at the end will prevent the beads from coming off. Arrange the three beads into a triangular shape and begin to wind the wire around the beads making a “nest”.
Make sure not to wrap all of the wire around the beads. You will need at least 8″-10″ of wire to wrap the outside of the “nest” together. The pliers help to pull the wires tight. I like to wrap the edges in at least three different spaces.
Once your little bird’s nest is finished, use the jewelry glue to attach it to the pad of the bobby pin.
My little hair accessory was rolling all over the place so I grabbed a piece of tinfoil to create a craft cradle. I followed the package instructions for allowing the glue to dry.
See? Isn’t my DIY hair accessory the prettiest thing for playground duty?
I keep my favorite hair accessory in a small bag tucked into the back of my classroom. Inside the bag is everything I need to make it through the day with all my sweet preschoolers.
My Pick Me Up Bag is stashed between the nursery rhymes and magnetic letters in my classroom. Along with my fancy bobby pins, hair ties, and a hair brush, I have several other items to help me be healthy for every part of life. The best thing about my little bag is that it fits perfectly in my purse allowing me to grab it and go!
Centrum VitaMints are perfect for a busy teacher! They are adult multivitamins with a refreshingly minty taste you can take/enjoy any time of day with or without food or water. I love that there is no chalky taste, just cool mint flavor!
The small Advil Tablet Vial is a for real life saver when all those crashing wooden blocks get to be too much. Nothing’s stronger, longer lasting or better on your tough aches and pains than Advil, and nothing works on more pains than Advil (among OTC pain relievers).
ChapStik Total Hydration is 100% Natural, age defying, and instantly smooths and moisturizes. I love it’s advanced nourishing formula with argan oil and avocado butter and rosehip oils.
I was able to find each of these items at my local Walmart in the Health and Beauty section. Having everything so close together makes filling my Pick Me Up Bag a breeze!
Don’t let the business of life get you down! Create your own Pick Me Up Bag and make sure to treat yourself to a few Bird’s Nest Bobby Pins. They are easy to make and add a fun, festive spark to a plain old ponytail!
Oh! I just had a thought!
Wouldn’t these Bird’s Nest Bobby Pins be awesome to give as a gift? Maybe as a sweet token of thanks or even a holiday gift! Would you like to receive a DIY Hair Accessory such as these?

Those birdsnest bobby pins are so cute! While I’m not a preschool teacher, I do have 3 little kids so those Advil tablet vials come in VERY handy. Having them in my purse is so helpful as the kids don’t seem to like the car and that’s where my big headaches seem to happen! Thanks for sharing! {client}
Thanks so much, Stephanie! I love my little fancy bobby pins and Advil is always a preschool teacher’s best friend. 🙂
